WV State Democratic Convention

Lsit of Delegates to the Convention (all delegates, Obama and Clinton)

The West Virginia State Democratic Convention was held on June 13th and 14th. In counties all throughout the state, our grassroots groups organized and delivered a strong election of delegates supporting Senator Obama who attended the convention in Charleston. It was a beautiful sight to see so many of us together participating in this historic event. This is the first time that this format and procedure was held to select the delegates to the National Convention for the Democratic Party, and the theme of party unity was pervasive throughout the event.

There were committee meetings that happened just before registration on Friday. The Credentials Committee, the Resolutions Committee and the Rules/Elections Committee meets all met in the afternoon followed by a dinner sponsored by the Governor at 4:30 PM. The Convention was called to order at 6:30 PM by Nick Casey, the Chairman of the Party. Then the delegates elected by their County Conventions were divided by the 3 congressional districts to caucus for the delegates to the National Convention in Denver. Each delegate got 2 ballots - 1 for female candidates (both Obama and Clinton) and 1 for male candidates (both Obama and Clinton). Each delegate got 6 votes - 3 for female and 3 for male. Due to the popular vote, the 1st and 2nd Districts got 2 Obama delegates and 4 Clinton delegates, and the 3rd District got 1 for Obama and 5 for Clinton. Congratulations to those who were chosen and the specific results will be posted here and on the Democratic website soon.

Saturday's events began at 9:30 and included the results of the election, election of a permanent Chairperson, committee reports, election of the Electors-at-Large and the Keynote Addresss. We heard from candidates for Secretary of State, Auditor, Comissioner of Agriculture, our Atourney General and the Governor. Then we voted on the resolutions that were passed on the the delegates from the resolutions committee. The most controversial of these was a resolution opposing mountaintop removal. There was an empassioned discussion regarding this. Most of the opposition were concerned that if it was to be adopted, it would be used by the Republicans as an attack point and prove very difficult for us in the general election. This resolution was defeated by less than 15 votes. We'll try to update with more details and a list of all resolutions as we can.

We all had a chance to work one-on-one to build good relationships to promote unity in the Party at the Convention and thanks to all of you who attended and participated. There was a good sense of unity for Barack and let's all work dilligently in our county democratic parties to foster this sense of unity and elect our democratic candidates on a statewide basis!
